🫁 Breathing is Life — Let’s Talk About Acute Respiratory Illness

As seasons shift and pollution rises, I’ve been seeing more families come into the clinic with one symptom: difficulty in breathing.

Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) doesn’t just cause cough and cold—Whether it's RSV, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, or the flu, early recognition and care save lives.

🫁 10 Things You Should Know About Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI)

1. ARI is any infection affecting the lungs, throat, nose, or airways—it can be from a simple cold to severe pneumonia.

2. It spreads through air, cough droplets, and dirty hands. Places like schools, public transport, offices, and poorly ventilated homes are common hotspots.

3. Babies, elderly adults, and people with asthma, diabetes, or heart disease are more vulnerable. So are smokers and people with poor nutrition.

4. Symptoms to watch for (in both kids and adults):

- Cough

- Fever or chills

- Shortness of breath

- Chest pain or tightness

- Wheezing or noisy breathing

- Tiredness, poor appetite, or irritability

5. Fast or labored breathing in children is a danger sign—get help immediately. In adults, watch for confusion, blue lips, or severe weakness.

6. Smoke, dust, and poor ventilation make symptoms worse. Avoid indoor cooking without proper ventilation 🪟. Use fans/vents/chimneys/open windows in your cooking areas as much as possible.

7. Home care for mild ARIs includes:

*Rest, fluids, steam inhalation, paracetamol

*Continue breastfeeding in babies and ensure good nutrition

* Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed

8. Warning signs that need urgent medical help:

*Difficulty breathing or gasping

*Chest pulling in (in kids)

*Cyanosis (blue lips/nails)

*Drowsiness or fainting

*Tiredness, poor appetite, or irritability

9. Vaccines help protect both children and older adults:

*Flu vaccine

*Pneumococcal vaccine

*COVID-19 boosters

*Routine immunizations in children (e.g., Hib, measles)

10. Prevention starts at home:

- Cover mouth when coughing

- Wash hands regularly

- Keep children away from sick adults and smoke

- Wearing mask if you are having active symptoms in a crowded area.

Breathing is the most basic right. Let’s protect it—with awareness, access, and community strength.
