GENDER GAP IN TECH
This international day of girl child I proudly share my girl code mission to close gender gap in tech field growing up I was made to believe that technology was NOT for girls or women and to add fuel to that mythology! my education curriculum at the time did no favor girl or women too!! no matter how bright you were in subjects like physic's, mathematics , science, electronics and computer engineering only boys were given first opportunity to shine .after my graduation that gender gap discrimination stuck with me for years I would go out of my way and visit tech hubs and tech labs across the city and in every computer I only saw the male gender enjoying what they like doing on those many computer screens and my mind would be like where are the girls at?! the urge to make a difference grew with every day events i would attend and no girl is up to speak as a guest speaker on tech field with the little tools I had started laying out plans and doing more research on how to address the gander barrier in my community the best part of it I met a women group in my community that was introduced to me by a good friend that had the same vision as mine and that changed everything because it gave me a platform support that I needed . I was enrolled in a six week program to better my effort on how to address the mythology that has been there for years in my community about girls not fit to learn more about tech I was able to build my confidence and better my leadership skills on how to push and encourage young girls to go for their dream career without fear of being judged for being who they are not only was I doing technical skills I also provided social and cultural sisterhood among our girls so they can feel less alone in a big world with male dominance. my team and I managed to organize events in different schools, community groups ,religious institutions yes it was not a walk in the park we were met with so much challenges from being called names , to being called politicians , to being chased away .if there is something that made me not give up!! is the training I went through that prepared me to face any challenges professionally without chaos .90% of my events were received positively through engagement with young mind for public, private and civil society sector. my frequent community engagement bore something new i found out that 10%of girl child have no idea about tech the male gender dominates the statistics. i also took it personal to share tech event with young boys , I was so shocked because they are so smart unlike our girls who are lagging behind for being discriminated. I wanted to engage government!! so i manage to brainstorm soft approach the local government to help issue affordable , flexible and adaptable strategies that will see girls given opportunity same as the boys who dominates in statistics and with the help of professionals kills I had earned from my training I was able to convince the government with my pitched idea that changed the lives of every girl in my community . I remember walking out of that office smiling and telling myself I did it !! the government a greed to my proposal and as we speak we have 5 community tech hubs that help women and young girls from poor background to enjoy the tech field something I never had growing up!! I remember struggling back in the days longing to be included in tech field I remember pretending to be a boy so I can be in science class that was being run by organization that only allowed men my friend talked to me about it and took the risk being a male for a day so that I can enjoy the computer class with others only my friend knew i was a girl others had no idea I still thank my good friend to date every time we meet for a coffee he reminds me of how daring I was . I tell him its the reason I'm very vocal with my mission especially to the young girls in my community I don't want them to go through what i went through my dream is to see more women engineers and more tech firms managed by women CEO in the next 10 years i want to look back and see how my dedication brought a big change in my community I want my community to breath technology , talk technology give the generation to come a better plat form of going for their dream studies without fear of not being selected for being female. i want to see girls prosper and give back to their community from what they have achieved from my dream that was birthed from my struggles .I don't want to see any girl left behind again because of were she comes from . everyone is welcome in my girl code mission. and as we celebrate an international girl child day I will forever dedicate my life to helping girls achieve their dream career no matter what it takes this years theme ' girls vision for the future' is my motto to do better with what I'm doing for my community continue advocating for girls so they can get the same opportunity as male gender that have been dominating every field world wide . if a male can do it I believe a female can do it 100% much better with more support , courage , and determination given to them with love , care , passion and no giving up on it until its done kind of mindset . my girl code idea is here as long as I live for all girls and women
