We believe that online violence is real violence
I recently came across an eye-opening post by my sister Harriet here at World Pulse about Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV). It struck a deep chord with me—not only because I have personally experienced it, but because I have seen it happen.
Through this platform, I met an incredible woman, @Taylor, a passionate advocate and writer. Together, we realized that we could not stay silent—we had to do something. And that’s how HerCyberRights was born.
We are collaborating to create a global movement to combat Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and protect women and girls from digital harm.
What is TFGBV?
According to UNFPA (2024), Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence is any act of violence committed, assisted, or aggravated through digital technologies against a person based on their gender.
TFGBV takes many forms, including:
⚠ Sextortion – Blackmailing victims using explicit content.
⚠ Image-Based Abuse – Sharing intimate images without consent.
⚠ Doxxing – Publishing private personal information to harm someone.
⚠ Cyberbullying & Online Harassment – Targeted digital abuse.
⚠ Cyberstalking – Monitoring or harassing someone online.
⚠ Online Grooming – Exploiting minors or vulnerable individuals.
⚠ Hate Speech & Impersonation – Using fake identities to inflict harm.
This issue affects millions of women and girls globally, yet it remains underreported and unaddressed.
Why We Must Take Action
Many victims of TFGBV struggle to report cases because tech platforms dismiss these incidents as ‘not harmful.’ But words can kill—they shatter self-esteem, push people to self-harm, and ruin lives.
- We need stronger mechanisms for detecting and removing harmful content.
- Tech platforms must be held accountable for enabling online abuse.
- TFGBV should be criminalized and highly penalized.
- We must create awareness and advocate for policy change.
HerCyberRights: Who We Are & What We Aim For
HerCyberRights is a global movement and advocacy initiative committed to ending Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and creating safe, inclusive, and dignified digital spaces for all.
Our Goal
We are on a mission to reach and educate 1 million young girls and women about TFGBV, equipping them with digital self-defense skills, legal knowledge, and mental health support.
Our Focus Areas
🔹 Awareness & Digital Literacy – Educating communities about TFGBV risks and protection.
🔹 Policy Advocacy – Pushing for stronger cyber laws and accountability from tech platforms.
🔹 Survivor Support – Providing legal aid, mental health support, and safe reporting spaces.
🔹 Digital Self-Defense Training – Teaching women how to protect themselves online.
HerCyberRights is not just a campaign—it is a lifelong movement that we hope will grow into a global NGO fighting for justice and digital safety.
