🌀 Low Back Pain — The Silent Burden We Must Acknowledge
Low back pain isn’t just an old age problem anymore.
It’s a daily struggle for working mothers, nurses, shopkeepers, office staff, drivers, and domestic workers.
In my clinic, I see more young women and men battling back pain than ever before.
1. Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common reasons people miss work or avoid physical activity — yet it’s often brushed off as “just tiredness.”
2. It can happen at any age, especially if you lift heavy items, sit long hours, have poor posture, or lack core strength.
3. Not all back pain is the same.
Some feel dull aches
Others feel sharp, shooting pain down the legs (sciatica)
Stiffness in the morning that eases during the day may hint underlying inflammation
4. Common causes include:
Muscle strain
Slipped disc
Poor posture or ergonomics
Vitamin D or calcium deficiency
Sedentary lifestyle
Hormonal changes (e.g., post-pregnancy)
5. Red flag symptoms that need urgent care:
Numbness or tingling in legs
passing urine or stool involuntarily
Weakness in one or both legs
Persistent pain not responding to rest or medication
6. Home care tips:
Warm compress
Gentle stretching
Avoid bed rest longer than 1–2 days
Maintain posture (use pillows/lumbar supports while sitting)
7. Movement is medicine.
Brisk walking, yoga, pelvic tilts, and light core exercises can reduce pain and prevent recurrence.
8. Painkillers only help temporarily.
Long-term relief comes from strengthening the back and correcting posture. A physiotherapist can help you with this.
9. Women are often ignored or told it's “normal.”
But postnatal back pain, endometriosis-related backache, or osteoporosis-related pain must be evaluated.
10. Prevention starts early.
Teach kids good posture, encourage daily activity, ensure healthy weight and screen breaks.
