Times are changing, and so are the trends in education. It is expected, that by 2020, the landscape of education and educational technology will be significantly more learner-based than it was in the past. E-learning and the use of computers became the norm in the majority of the world's educational institutes.
The mindset of millennial is noticeably different from the older generations, and it is reflected in the new systems of education all over the world. The increasing growth of educational technology is one of the biggest indicators.
Following are the trends that can be expected in education by 2020:
Learner-Centered Vision

Education Reimagined Vision
In order for the next generation of learners to succeed and thrive, their learning experiences must facilitate their development in three primary domains: knowledge, skills, and dispositions. The chart shares their descriptions of each of these domains and a set of examples adapted from the work of the Council of Chief State School Officers:
Aims of K-12 Institutions
The aims of K-12 education are being broadened now, with the goals being centered around individual students with the help of online and computerized tools.
Learner Experience (LX)
Gaining popularity in the recent years, learner experience design (LxD) is an approach to e-learning that designs on the elements of user experience. The K-12 schools of 2020 will incorporate more authentic learning experiences to boost retention and achievements.
Project-Based Learning
Students will engage in project-based learning that is both interest-based and meaningful and will be encouraged to design and “make” solutions in a variety of subjects.
Informal Learning
Informal Learning is going to be taken to a whole new level. Its previous reputation of incompetence will no longer be the expectation of informal learning. E-learning programs will allow students getting an informal education to have individual tutors educating them on an international standard.
Socially Embedded Learning
Students in the vision of 2020 are going to be socially-intelligent people with well-developed EQs and better personal relationships. Because of the learner-centered pattern of online education, students will be able to develop their emotional intelligence efficiently.
