"A Call for Global Acknowledgment and Apology for Historical and Present Injustices"

Letter of Acknowledgment and Apology for Historical and Current Injustices

I speak today to acknowledge the suffering caused by many injustices, both past and present. Among them are colonization, slavery, genocides, land and resource theft, unjust incarcerations, racial, religious, and gender discrimination, political persecution, wars of conquest, forced labor, human trafficking, the oppression of indigenous peoples, systematic sexual violence during conflicts, ethnic cleansing, forced displacements, mass killings, medical experiments on unwilling subjects, oppressive regimes, and many other forms of violence perpetrated by humans against each other.

I recognize that these injustices are not just relics of the past, but continue to manifest today in various and insidious forms. Economic inequality, systemic racism, police brutality, xenophobia, exploitation of workers, migration crises, climate change exacerbated by resource exploitation, and the pervasive sexual violence that persists in our societies all prolong the suffering and divisions inherited from our collective history.

Through this letter, I express my deep sorrow and sincere apologies for the wrongs committed against peoples and individuals throughout history and in our current world. I acknowledge that actions driven by greed, domination, and disregard for fundamental human rights have left deep and persistent scars in our societies, scars that continue to manifest as inequalities, poverty, marginalization, and conflict.

Unlike our states, which often refuse to acknowledge these injustices despite the fundamental principles of human rights and the moral teachings of all major religions, I take personal responsibility to offer these apologies. Our governments hesitate or refuse to do so due to political and economic considerations or fear of legal and financial implications. Yet, this inaction is in stark contradiction to the values of equality, justice, and human dignity proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and upheld by all religious traditions.

Human rights affirm the universality of freedom, equality, and dignity for all, regardless of race, creed, or origin. Yet, states continue to deny or downplay past horrors and current injustices. In doing so, they turn their backs on the very principles they claim to uphold.

I apologize to all those who have suffered and continue to suffer the consequences of these injustices, and I recognize that these apologies cannot repair what has been broken. However, I hope they can be a first step toward broader and sincere recognition of past and present wrongs, and an invitation to our governments to show moral courage.

I call on all nations, institutions, and individuals to follow this example and actively engage in efforts of acknowledgment, reconciliation, and reparation. I also invite each signatory of this letter to share it within their networks, including groups and friends who may be descendants or directly affected by these injustices, to spread this message of recognition and solidarity. Together, we can foster collective awareness and promote a future of peace and justice for all.
