The Strength of Women Standing Against Gender-Based Violence in Pakistan
Growing up in a small town in Pakistan, I lived amidst a silence that enveloped issues like gender-based violence. Abuse and harassment were topics no one dared to discuss openly, hidden beneath the weight of societal norms and cultural expectations. Over time, I came to realize that this silence was more than the absence of conversation—it was a barrier to justice and healing.
The need to address this silence became personal to me when I learned about the struggles of a close friend, Meher. She faced immense pressure from her family to marry at a young age, but she courageously chose to pursue her education instead. Her decision came at a heavy price: she was subjected to abuse and isolation. Sadly, Meher’s story mirrors the reality faced by countless women across Pakistan. Witnessing her endure such hardship ignited a sense of urgency within me to bring about change.
While I have not yet been part of a formal campaign, my passion for addressing gender-based violence has been growing stronger each day. I’ve seen the immense challenges of speaking out against such violence in Pakistan—where patriarchy dominates and victims are often silenced and defamed. Yet, I firmly believe that solidarity and collective action are the keys to breaking these harmful cycles.
Today, I am taking my first steps toward creating a movement for change. I am launching an initiative to raise awareness about gender-based violence, support survivors, and challenge the discriminatory practices ingrained in our society. This effort is built on the belief that no woman should face violence or injustice in silence. Together, we can create a safe space for women to share their stories, find support, and reclaim their strength.
Through this initiative, I aim to collaborate with communities, educators, and organizations already working in this space. My goals are simple but powerful:
- Raise Awareness: Educate people about the realities of gender-based violence, its impact, and how to prevent it.
- Empower Survivors: Provide platforms and resources for women to share their stories and find support.
- Challenge Norms: Break the myths, stereotypes, and harmful traditions that perpetuate violence and discrimination.
Pakistan’s societal norms may be deeply rooted in patriarchy, but they are not unchangeable. These constructs were shaped by culture, not by our ancestors’ teachings. Now is the time to rewrite the narrative. Let’s empower girls to challenge and change these norms, so they can live with dignity and freedom.
This journey has just begun, and I invite you to be a part of it. Together, we can turn this vision into reality—a Pakistan where women are no longer silenced by fear but are uplifted by courage, solidarity, and hope.
