A Community at a Crossroads: Hope Amidst the Challenges.

I live in a small community in the western part of Nigeria that is faced with both opportunity and challenges.

Every day, I walk the streets and witness the dual realities that shape this place. one of potential, and one of peril.

Two things stand out to me as I walk on the road of this vibrant yet troubled environment.

The first is the rise of "Yahoo boys," young men who have lost their way, turning to online fraud as a means of survival. They drive flashy cars, flaunt their wealth, and live by their own rules, yet they are caught in a cycle that robs them of a true future.

Their destinies are tied to a lifestyle that lacks purpose, direction, and fulfillment.

The second is the phenomenon of "Omo Grandma." Many grandchildren here are abandoned in the care of their elderly grandparents while their parents chase dreams in faraway cities or abroad.

These children, often neglected and without proper guidance, are vulnerable. The absence of strong parental figures and the allure of fast money make them easy prey for negative influences.

This community, despite having a university, remains largely underdeveloped. The youth are left with few positive outlets for their energy and talents, making them susceptible to the temptations of quick but destructive gains. The situation is heartbreaking, yet it is not without hope.

At Lush Foundation, where I volunteer as a Project Coordinator, we see these challenges firsthand.

We do our best to counter the negative influences by going into local secondary schools, teach the children the world of God, organize social gathering where we teach them about different soft skills.

We also have a monthly program called Teens connect where the children have the opportunity to use a computer and learn basic computer appreciation.

We aim to equip these young minds with the tools they need to carve out a better future. But our resources are limited, and the task is monumental.

Each day, as I work with these children, I am reminded of the power of community and the importance of giving back. I've seen the difference that a helping hand can make.

Whether it was during my time volunteering with Ven. Prof. T.N. Okujagu in Southern Nigeria, where I helped boys and girls acquire free skills like soap making and computer literacy, or here in Ekiti State with Lush Foundation, the goal has always been the same; to change the narrative and give the next generation a fighting chance.

As I reflect on these challenges, I hold onto the belief that change is possible. It begins with love, advocacy, and a willingness to extend a helping hand. We may be limited in what we can do, but we are not powerless. Every small effort counts.

In this community, I see a future that can be different. A future where the youth are guided by positive role models, where they learn to value their potential, and where they are given the tools to build a better life. It won’t be easy, but it is worth striving for.

Wherever you find yourself, remember that your actions can make a difference. Show love, advocate for what is right, and extend your hand to help those in need.

Together, we can change the narrative.
