“Liberian women are not statistics they are voices silenced too soon. We demand justice. We choose change.”

A Heartbreaking Plea From Monrovia: A Call to End Violence Against Women

Why do men, who once pledged love and protection, choose violence instead? Why is peace traded for tragedy? Don’t they know that not every relationship is meant to last? Must a woman’s vulnerability be used against her? Are our feelings invisible?

I write from Monrovia, Liberia, with a heart heavy from grief and outrage. In recent years, we’ve lost too many women mothers, sisters, daughters, friends to the very people who claimed to love them.

We mourn Princess, stabbed by the hands of her own boyfriend her life cut short. We mourn Blessing, ambushed and stabbed in broad daylight by her own partner, her blood soaking the soil where she fell. And we mourn Martha, beaten to death in her own home by the man she trusted. These are not isolated cases. These are shattered lives caused by people who once promised love.

We witnessed young women trapped and beaten in closed compounds, desperately fighting for life, only to lose it. In Nimba County and beyond, women continue to die at the hands of intimate partners.

Why is this happening in a country where women carry life for nine months and nurture it with tenderness? How can those same hands that cradle life be crushed by those who once vowed love? Over a hundred women in Liberia have died due to gender-based violence killed by husbands, boyfriends, or lovers. These are not isolated incidents. This is a national crisis.

And when we ask why why not choose to walk away instead of turning to murder there are no answers that justify the pain. Disagreements or heartbreak should never cost someone their life. Women are not objects to be discarded when misunderstood. We are living, breathing human beings. We dream. We hope. We plan for futures filled with family, friendship, and possibility. Why are those futures destroyed over wounded pride or rejected control?

To President Joseph Boakai and government officials: this is no longer a private issue. This is a wake up call. We are pleading for urgent intervention. Laws must be strengthened and enforced. Survivors need justice, and those at risk need protection. Silence and inaction are no longer acceptable.

To my fellow Liberians: please join me in raising your voices. Share this message in homes, on the streets, in classrooms, and across social platforms. The woman murdered today could be your mother, your sister, your daughter or you. The time to act is now.

To our international community: this is not an attempt to shame our country. It is a cry for help in a crisis we are facing. We need awareness, support, and encouragement to build a future where women are safe. Education, advocacy, and resources must be prioritized. Let this message be a bridge to unite us against gender-based violence.

To my World Pulse community: I come in peace, bearing the weight of mourning but also the strength of resilience. I ask you to stand with us and amplify this plea. Behind every grave filled with unfulfilled dreams is a woman whose story deserved a different ending.

The cost is too high. Families are shattered. Dreams lost. Communities traumatized. How long must we wait before the leaders act?

We need urgent reform:

- Stronger laws against gender-based violence

- Swift prosecution and sentencing of perpetrators

- National campaigns to educate and raise awareness

- Safe houses and emergency shelters for survivors

- Mandatory counseling for abusers and survivors

- Empowerment programs for women and girls

- Government accountability and public reporting on gender violence cases

- Integration of gender-based violence response into health and education systems

Let us give voice to the silenced. Let us not wait until another life is lost. We need your help today, not tomorrow.

Initiative Name: Women’s Voices Against Violence Liberia

Initiative Description:

My initiative is a grassroots advocacy movement focused on raising awareness and mobilizing action against gender-based violence in Liberia. Through storytelling, public campaigns, and community engagement, I highlight the tragic cases of women like Princess, Blessing, and Martha who were killed by their partners, to expose the depth of this crisis and humanize its impact.

The heart of my work is storytelling with purpose: writing emotionally resonant pieces that call for urgent reform, stronger legal protections, and widespread education. I engage local communities, leverage social media platforms like World Pulse, and speak directly to policymakers and the international community, urging them to see that violence against women is not a private matter it’s a national emergency.

This initiative aims to:

- Empower survivors and give voice to those silenced by violence

- Educate men and youth on non-violence and respectful relationships

- Advocate for stronger laws, better enforcement, and survivor support services

- Unite communities and leaders to create lasting change

It is driven by grief, but also hope the belief that through awareness, solidarity, and action, we can stop this cycle. Every story shared is a seed for reform. Every voice raised is a step toward justice.
