The sound of my mother’s footsteps at dawn was my first lesson in resilience. She woke up before the sun, her hands rough from endless toil, yet her spirit unbreakable. With each step she took, each bead of sweat she wiped from her brow, she was shaping my future.
I grew up watching her work tirelessly, doing everything in her power to keep food on the table and my dreams alive. Some days, she came home exhausted, her feet swollen from standing all day, but she never let fatigue steal her warmth. "Education will open doors for you, my daughter," she would whisper, her voice both a plea and a promise.
She was my first teacher, instilling in me the value of hard work and the courage to dream beyond our circumstances. She believed in my potential even when life seemed determined to prove her wrong. And so, I pushed forward.
Today, I walk through the gates of Chuka University, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Each lecture, every assignment, every challenge is a tribute to the sacrifices she made. I study not just for myself but for her—for the sleepless nights, the missed meals, and the silent prayers she whispered for my future.
But the road hasn’t been easy. There were moments when I almost gave up—when school fees became a burden too heavy to bear and rent threatened to steal my roof. In those moments, I remembered my mother’s resilience. If she could fight, so could I. And then, a miracle—a bursary that kept my dream alive, a reminder that hard work and faith never go unanswered.
I envision the day I will hold my degree in my hands, my mother watching proudly from the crowd. I see her eyes glistening with tears—not of sorrow, but of triumph. Her sacrifices will not be in vain.
To every girl with a mother who fights for her future, keep going. To every woman who sacrifices for her daughter, your love is a legacy. And to my mother—may the Lord bless you with many more years to witness the success of the daughter you raised so courageously.
This journey is ours, Mama. And I will make you proud.
