A nostalgic tool to convey information.
Peddie is a town in Ngqushwa, it's in the rural side of the Eastern Cape and has an estimate population of 68,300. Imagine impacting 20 000 of that population by just giving them the right tool, a Newspaper. Not just any newspaper but a newspaper fueled with uplifting information, great tips, educational news and easy recipes.
A newspaper is a very important tool of communication, in South Africa The Daily Sun is the biggest daily newspaper and targets readers in and around major urban centre's of South Africa.
The purpose of a newspaper is to convey current information to communities, but as years progressed people started moving away from printing paper and started sharing information digitally. Which is not a bad thing to some extent, but we have people in rural areas who can't have access to vital information anymore because a certain newspaper no longer delivers the paper physically. Whereas they still believe in the good old way of reading, a dull grey crispy paper filled with pictures and information about the wonders of the world.
In my ongoing goal of supporting communities from the rural areas to the less informed individuals because of lack of resources, this old tool of communication will keep them informed in a positive environmental way. How it will work is that every month we distribute batches of newspapers filled with information about good nutrition, easy recipes and how they can benefit from trying new varieties of vegetables. Now the nice thing about a newspaper is that it's reusable, they can recycle it while they wait for the next issue.
The newspaper will also have tips from experts on how to preserve certain foods, vegetables voucher. We not just sharing information and dissappear, but we actively learn along with the communities by hosting monthly brunch info session where we connect and catch up. Having healthy communities is a collective effort, so let's collaborate and bridge those gaps on access of meaningful information for elderly people, people in the rural areas and caregivers.
The goal is to have a monthly distribution of the newspaper to different communities, and a quarterly check in with a masterclass to introduce a new vegetable they've never tried. Have an easy brunch catch up to enjoy refreshing nutural ice tea's together while nurses check their BP to monitor. A newspaper that not only nourishes your mind but your body too, taking something nostalgic like a newspaper and turn it into a recipe for good health.
