A Ray of Hope

Social work

When I first started at university , I was buzzing with dreams and excitement. Like a lot of my fellow students, I couldn’t wait for the lectures, diving into books, and meeting new friends. But I never expected that one simple opportunity would completely change how I see things.

Right from the start, I got involved with the Social Work Department. They opened up a whole new world for me through workshops and activities that took me beyond just the university life. One experience that really stuck with me was when I volunteered to teach kids who lived in informal settlements near campus.

Every week, we held classes for these kids—many of whom had never set foot in a proper school. I was there teaching them basic English and Math, but honestly, I learned just as much from them as they did from me.

Seeing their eagerness to learn, even with so many challenges, was nothing short of inspiring. They showed up with big smiles and bright eyes, ready to soak up whatever little knowledge we could share. Those classes were about more than just the subjects; they were about building connections, trust, and sparking hope.

This whole experience showed me that real change doesn’t have to come from grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts in a small classroom, with a few notebooks, and a heart that wants to make a difference.

Now, I hold onto those moments as a reminder: education isn’t just a privilege; it’s also a responsibility. And just a few hours each week can really light up someone’s world.
