A Totem

Sometime toward the end of May, sometimes June, the Alaskan woods start to slowly shrug off the blanket of snow that covers the expectant Spring that lies beneath.

On a warm day on one such May, this totem was revealed by a glacier lookout where I had stopped to stare.

In Native American culture, the totem was often carved to note an important event or the beginning of a new endeavor. These totems also represent the ability of a culture to tell their story when there was not a written language.

I offer this totem as sign of hope for all those who have yet to discover how to voice their stories and those who have been hushed from telling.
