ABUSED 2
I recently shared a story about how my neighbour abuses her domestic servants. Something that triggered us to report her to the SOCIAL WELFARE department.
As a concerned sister and someone determined to see women and girls treated fairly. I have been paying regular visits to this department to ensure a follow up on the matter. I was made to understand that the social welfare is not a punitive but a corrective service. They are just peace brokers. Anyways my neighbour was called up last Tuesday the 25/2/2020 and adviced to pay some damages to her maids which was calculated at 500000 CFA. To be shared amongst the 3 girls she had lived with within this period of time. She was cautioned to note that if she doesn't comply within 4 months a forwarding letter will be sent to the LEGAL DEPARTMENT to prefer a charge for Assault under section 181 of the CAMEROON Procedure Code (CP)
Together with the social welfare delegates we have been making regular trips to areas in the neighbourhoods to identify these displaced girls and take their statistics.
We hold seminars with them almost on weekly basis to educate them on their rights if the opt to work as house helps
They are schooled to be able to bargain their pay. They now know that The LABOUR CODE of 1992 in Cameroon stipulates that the minimum wage for any worker should not be less than 37000CFA. Whereas my neighbour has been paying 10000CFA.
Under the instructions of the boss of the SOCIAL WELFARE department a diary has been opened for these young ghirls and any person who needs a house help must come and sign a contract and pay the maid through an account. This will ensure that these girls can save money to go back to school when desired or start a trade for those who are already learning trades.
In other to empower these girls some of us volunterd to take one or two home to train them due to the size of my home and financial responsibility as an IDP myself ( internally displaced person) I took just one lil girl of 15 named ITA she has found a place already at my home since she is same age group with my three daughters. iTAs love for future business have made her to quickly learn how to make PUFF PUFF. Something she hopes to sell in the nearest future at her makeshift restaurant. She made some for breakfast this morning and I will share some pucs.
