Dunia Rafiki Organisation is committed to providing high-quality early childhood development (ECD) services to all children attending at our community-based ECD center, regardless of their families' financial background. We recognise that access to affordable healthcare is a critical factor in ensuring children's well-being and ability to strive in our program.
This initiatives aims to provide children who are attending at our community-based ECD centers (Nganza & Kangaye B)with an affordable insurance cards through the Community Health Fund (CHF): an important program established by the government under Law no. 1 of the year 2001 (Chapter 409 of the Laws of Tanzania, Edition 2002) for a household, group or family or an individual to contribute to medical expenses before falling ill. CHF also targets groups of six (6) people in institutions such as schools (students), children attending daycare, or cooperatives where members receive quality health care throughout the year. The beneficiaries will benefit from all primary health care services for prevention and treatment provided in the clinic, health centre and district hospital, such as; outpatient care and admission in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, laboratory tests, minor surgery service, vaccinations and preventive checkups.
Intended outcomes:
Improved health outcomes; Children will receive timely medical care, leading to better health and development
Increased school readiness; Healthy children are better prepared to learn and succeed in school.
Reduced healthcare costs; Early intervention can prevent more expensive health problems later.
Gender-equity; Promoting access to healthcare for all children, regardless gender.
Why we believe this i
Affordable health insurance cards for low-income children can contribute to a shift in power in a few key ways:
Empowering Families:
Reduced Financial Stress: The burden of healthcare costs can be a significant source of stress for low-income families. Affordable health insurance removes this barrier, allowing families to make healthcare decisions based on their child's needs, not financial limitations. This empowers them to advocate for their child's health and well-being.
Increased Agency: Knowing their child is covered allows families to seek preventive care and address health concerns promptly. This proactive approach can lead to better overall health outcomes and avoid potential complications that could require more expensive interventions later.
Strengthening Communities:
Improved Health Outcomes: When children have access to healthcare, it leads to a healthier community overall. This reduces the spread of illnesses and lowers the strain on healthcare systems.
Increased Educational Attainment: Healthy children are better able to attend school regularly and focus on learning. This can lead to higher graduation rates and better opportunities for the future.
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: Good health is a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty. By ensuring children have access to healthcare, they are more likely to reach their full potential and contribute positively to society.
Shifting Power Dynamics:
Reduced Reliance on Public Programs: Affordable health insurance can help reduce the reliance on emergency rooms and public health clinics for basic care. This frees up resources for those who are truly in need.
Holding Healthcare Providers Accountable: With health insurance, families become informed consumers of healthcare services. They are empowered to choose their providers and hold them accountable for quality care. This can lead to a more competitive and responsive healthcare system.
Thus shifting power dynamics is a gradual process. Affordable health insurance cards are a piece of the puzzle, but other efforts are needed to address broader issues of healthcare access and equity.
Overall, affordable health insurance cards for low-income children are a powerful tool that can empower families, strengthen communities, and contribute to a more just healthcare system.
