African Union Joins Every Women Treaty



Thee African Union for adopting the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.


This new convention is a testament to Africa’s commitment to women’s rights and protecting the rights of women and girls to live a life free from violence. It is an important and necessary milestone in the ongoing struggle for gender equality.


Regional and global treaties work together to bolster and support one another. The Adoption of the AU Convention on VAWGs and the call for the new Optional Protocol to CEDAW are deeply complementary. Together, these instruments create a robust and holistic approach to tackling violence and discrimination against women and girls, bridging regional and global commitments for greater impact.
