Aging and Womanhood: Embracing the Beauty of Growing Older

Aging, for women, has been unfairly painted as an enemy. Society glorifies youth while making growing older seem like a flaw—something to hide, fear, or fight against. But why? Why should a woman be ashamed of something as natural as time?

I’ve personally struggled with this. I started college later than most of my peers due to financial challenges. While many joined at 17, I was 20 or 21. To some, that may not seem like a big gap, but in the crowd I was surrounded by, I felt old. My friends—who were younger—would unknowingly make me insecure about my age. They would joke about being “Gen Z” and laugh, as if my age somehow made me less relevant. Over time, I started feeling uncomfortable when people asked how old I was. I carried this unnecessary weight, fearing I didn’t belong. And I know I’m not alone.

For many women, aging is treated as a countdown, a race against time. Society constantly reminds us that our "value" is linked to youth, while men are celebrated as they grow older—“aging like fine wine,” they say. When men grow older, they are called “zaddy” or admired for their maturity. Women, on the other hand, are told they are “running out of time,” mocked for being "too old," and pressured to maintain a forever-young appearance. Even worse, we as women sometimes reinforce these harmful narratives ourselves.

But here’s the truth: aging is a privilege, not a punishment. Many people don’t get the chance to grow old. Every year you live is proof of your journey, wisdom, and resilience. Why should we shrink ourselves to fit society’s unrealistic expectations? Why should we be afraid to own our experiences, our scars, our stories?

Let’s change this narrative. Aging is beautiful. Being in your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, or beyond should be a source of pride, not shame. There is beauty in wisdom, in embracing each phase of life with confidence. There is joy in being the woman that younger girls look up to—the aunt, the mentor, the woman who has lived, loved, and learned.

So, to every woman reading this: Do not be afraid of your age. Say it boldly, proudly. Your age is not a weakness—it’s your crown, your symbol of growth. Wear it with pride, and never let the world make you feel like you need to shrink yourself to fit into its outdated standards.

Aging is not an enemy. Aging is power.
