As Americans live longer , more people are at risk for Alzheimer's .

Alzheimer's disease was discovered in 1906 . As of now in 5 and 1/2 million Americans are Alzheimer's patients . As Alzheimer's disease progresses ,

brain tissue shrinks . Hippocampus shrinks . Cerebral cortex shrinks .

Ventricles enlarge . As the ventricles enlarge and the cells of the shrinking

hippocampus degenerate , memory declines . When Alzheimer's disease

spreads throughout the cerebral cortex , language , judgment , behavior ,

and bodily functions decline along with memory until death , usually

8 to 10 years after diagnosis . During this period healthy living is possible

with a combination of social , mental , and physical stimulation . Exercise

and a nutritious vegetarian diet are also important and may help Alzheimer's

patients cope better . AnasooyaAthreyaSeshaAnjaneyakrishna "
