Boldness Feeds the Brave

Boldness Feeds the Brave

There’s an old African proverb that says, “Boldness feeds the brave.” I’ve often reflected on this, especially during moments when uncertainty feels louder than courage.

In the wild, when danger strikes, most animals flee. But the baboon doesn’t always run—it calculates. It measures risk, weighs its options, and sometimes dares to stay. That calculated courage often earns it survival and reward. In contrast, even the mighty leopard—the symbol of power—hesitates when faced with the unexpected. There’s a lesson here for us humans: fear is natural, but boldness is a choice.

In our professional and personal lives, we often face the leopard moments—those unpredictable shifts that test our confidence, direction, or even sense of self. Whether it’s speaking up in a meeting, pitching an idea that others doubt, changing careers, or addressing burnout, we stand at a fork between hesitation and courage.

Mental health professionals call this cognitive courage—the ability to act despite the discomfort of uncertainty. It’s not recklessness; it’s resilience paired with discernment. Just as the baboon assesses before it acts, boldness requires awareness—of your limits, your emotions, and your purpose.

Many of us suffer quietly under the weight of imposter syndrome, perfectionism, or fear of failure. These are not weaknesses; they’re human emotions waiting to be reframed. What if instead of running from discomfort, we studied it—calculated it—and moved through it? That shift in mindset turns fear into fuel.

In leadership, relationships, and self-growth, the prize rarely lies in safety—it lies in stepping forward when it feels easier to step back. Boldness doesn’t guarantee an easy path, but it nourishes growth, purpose, and self-respect.

So today, if you’re standing at a crossroads where fear whispers “not yet,” remember: even the leopard hesitates, but the brave—those who dare to act with intention—find fortune waiting on the other side.

Be bold. Calculate. Step forward anyway.
