“Boundaries Are Professional, Not Personal” — My Story as a Female Lawyer

“Boundaries Are Professional, Not Personal” — My Story as a Female Lawyer

“As a female lawyer in Cameroon, I’ve learned the hard way that dignity doesn’t come with the robe — it comes with drawing the line.”

I’ve learned something the hard way.

Boundaries are professional — not personal.

As a young female lawyer in Cameroon, I entered the courtroom with crisp files and sharper confidence. But beyond the legal briefs and case law, I was soon introduced to another reality: the subtle blurring of boundaries between professionalism and personal expectation.

It starts quietly.

A male colleague insists on calling me “ma belle” in front of clients. A senior official offers “career advice” over drinks — advice that comes with uncomfortable stares and invitations. A client asks if I’m married before asking about his legal options. A courtroom security guard decides I look “too pretty to be a real lawyer.” Laugh it off, they say. Take it as a compliment, they advise.

But none of it felt funny. Because it wasn’t.

As women in law — and many professions — we are often expected to tolerate disrespect dressed as familiarity, as if setting boundaries makes us cold or unfriendly. And yet, every time we laugh off a sexist joke or smile through a boundary violation, we shrink a little. We silence a part of ourselves.

I stayed silent, too. For a while.

Until I realized: boundaries are not rejection. They are protection. They are how we honor our work, our dignity, and our right to show up as professionals without being reduced to our appearance, gender, or marital status.

Now, I speak up. I correct clients firmly. I walk out of “mentorship” dinners when the tone shifts. I support younger female colleagues when they feel they can’t. I remind everyone: my professionalism is not an invitation to invade my personal space.

World Pulse has taught me that our stories matter. That when we name what we endure, we reclaim power — not just for ourselves, but for others walking behind us.

To every woman navigating blurred lines in silence — your voice is valid, your boundaries are sacred, and your presence in your profession is not up for negotiation.

Speak firmly. Walk proudly. You belong.

Boundaries are not barriers; they are bridges to dignity.

Boundaries are professional. Not personal. Period.
