"Breaking
Barriers: A Survivor's Journey from Tradition to Technology"
In the heart of a rural Kenyan
village, the sun began to rise, casting golden rays upon the fields that had
borne witness to many traditions. Among the vibrant colors of dawn, I, Amina, a
survivor of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), sat under the shade of the baobab
tree, contemplating the journey that led me here. My experience is not unique;
countless young girls still face the grim reality of FGM. However, as I reflect
on my past, I recognize that we now have a powerful opportunity to shape our
futures through education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
As a girl who grew up in a community where FGM was a longstanding tradition, I
vividly recall the day my fate was sealed. The ceremony, painted as a rite of
passage, left deep scars, both physical and emotional. However, my resilience
became my strength. With the help of local women who had also endured the same
fate, I began to understand the importance of education and technology in
breaking free from the cycle of violence and ignorance. They taught me how to
use mobile applications to raise awareness about the dangers of FGM and the
significance of education in transforming our futures.
Today, on International Girls in ICT Day, I stand proud to share my story and
empower the next generation of girls. Through coding workshops and community
events focused on STEM, we are creating safe spaces for dialogue about personal
experiences and the potential of technology to effect change. By equipping
girls with the skills needed to thrive in a digital world, we are not only
preventing FGM but also fostering a community that embraces innovation and
progress. Together, we can rewrite our narratives and inspire others to join
the fight against harmful practices, illuminating a path toward a brighter
future.
