Karimi - The Farmer of Dead Dreams

In Kajiado County, Kenya, a beacon of hope shines brightly for teenage girls facing adversity. Purity Karimi Gikunda, a woman with unwavering determination, has dedicated her life to empowering these girls, helping them break free from the shackles of teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, and educational barriers.

Her organisation, the Greenland Girls Schools Group, stands as a testament to her transformative impact on countless lives of girls who became teenage mums. Through the Greenland Girls School Group, Purity Gikunda provides a nurturing environment where young mothers can regain their confidence and pursue their dreams. She instils hope and resilience in her students, inspiring them to defy the odds and achieve their goals. Greenland Girls School exemplifies the profound impact of transforming communities and uplifting vulnerable populations.

A World of Challenges

Life for many teenage girls in Kajiado County and elsewhere in Kenya is far from idyllic. Early teenage pregnancies force them into adulthood prematurely, robbing them of their innocence and potential. The lack of access to education and basic sanitary needs further compounds their struggles. The burden of household responsibilities often falls disproportionately on their shoulders, hindering their educational advancement and personal development. By addressing the root causes of their challenges, we can help unlock their potential and cultivate a generation of empowered women.

Purity Gikunda - A Beacon of Hope

Purity, a resident of Kiserian in Kajiado County, witnessed these struggles first-hand when she worked as a social worker for the Catholic Church in Kajiado County. Instead of turning away, she chose to take a leap of faith (literally) and be a force for change. In 2010, assisted by Mr Samuel Mukilya (a trained Public Health officer) and others, she co-founded the first Greenland Girls School in Kajiado as a safe haven for teenage mothers.

Purity believed in addressing the holistic needs of teen mothers, recognizing that education alone wasn’t enough. Under her leadership, Greenland Girls School became a beacon of hope and empowerment in the community. She has helped change the narrative surrounding teenage motherhood, showing that with the right support and opportunities, these girls could excel and build bright futures for themselves and their children. Purity Gikunda’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and determination.

The Greenland Girls School - A Sanctuary for Aspirations

The Greenland Girls School Group is more than just an educational institution; it’s a sanctuary where hope blossoms. Here, teenage mothers find solace, support, and a second chance. The schools provide counselling services, helping the girls heal from their traumatic experiences. Purity’s unwavering commitment ensures that no girl is left behind. Beyond traditional schooling, this sanctuary fosters a community where these young mothers can rebuild their lives with dignity. The school empowers them to envision brighter futures, nurturing their aspirations despite the challenges they face. It becomes a beacon of change, challenging societal norms and advocating for the rights and opportunities of every girl, regardless of their circumstances.

Education as Empowerment

Education is the cornerstone of transformation, essential for empowering individuals to reshape their lives. Purity firmly believes in the power of knowledge to effect change and strives to equip these girls with the essential tools to rewrite their life stories. At Purity’s school, a comprehensive curriculum not only helps the girls catch up on missed education but also cultivates their unique talents and strengths. Purity’s unwavering dedication ensures that each girl receives personalized attention, creating an environment where they feel valued and capable. By offering more than just academics, Purity’s school becomes a place where young girls can discover their potential and build confidence in themselves. Beyond teaching subjects, Purity fosters a sense of belonging and self-worth among her students, which is crucial for their personal and academic development. Through education, Purity provides these girls with the foundation they need to break free from limitations.

Breaking Taboos - Sanitary Pads for Dignity

In a society where menstruation is often shrouded in silence and shame, Purity courageously breaks the taboo. She passionately ensures that every girl has access to sanitary pads, enabling them to attend school without fear or embarrassment. By addressing this fundamental need, Purity not only restores their dignity but also unlocks doors to a brighter future for these young women. Purity’s efforts go beyond merely distributing sanitary pads; she advocates for menstrual health education and challenges the stigma associated with periods. In classrooms and communities, Purity’s impact is transformative. Girls no longer miss school due to menstruation-related challenges. Instead, they are empowered to pursue their education and dreams without interruption or shame.

Impact Beyond the Classroom

Purity’s impact extends far beyond the confines of the classroom walls. She actively collaborates with local leaders, advocating for policies that safeguard and promote girls’ rights within the community. Her dedicated work serves as an inspiration for other community members, encouraging them to rally behind the cause and contribute to a ripple effect of positive change. Purity’s efforts not only empower young mothers but also cultivate a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of the community. Her holistic approach underscores the interconnectedness of education, advocacy, and community engagement in fostering meaningful and lasting change. Purity’s tireless dedication and passionate advocacy serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring collective action and driving progress towards a more equitable and compassionate society.
