Breaking the Silence: CITAM Eldoret Conversations on Childhood Sexual Trauma

On 19th July 2025, at the Women of Impact Conference hosted by CITAM Eldoret, an important shift happened in the life of the church.
For years, childhood sexual trauma was a topic that remained largely unspoken in many faith communities—too heavy, too uncomfortable, or seen as “a private matter.” But on this day, in a room filled with women from different walks of life, the conversation broke free from silence.
We talked openly about:
What childhood sexual trauma really is and how it affects survivors emotionally, physically, spiritually, and relationally—sometimes for decades.
How faith communities can unintentionally silence survivors through stigma, disbelief, or lack of trauma-informed support.
The healing journey—and how the church can become a safe place where survivors are believed, supported, and walked with in love.
What struck me most was the response.
Heads nodded. Tears flowed. Questions were asked with courage. Survivors shared pieces of their own stories—some for the very first time.
The message was clear: the church is ready to talk about this.
CITAM Eldoret’s leadership affirmed that creating safe spaces for such conversations is not optional—it’s part of the Gospel mandate to bring healing to the brokenhearted (Isaiah 61:1). The conference didn’t just raise awareness; it opened a door for ongoing ministry, training, and pastoral care that addresses trauma with both biblical truth and compassionate understanding.
It was a reminder that when the church breaks the silence, healing becomes possible—not just for individuals, but for entire communities.
