I remember the first time I truly recognized unconscious bias in action. It wasn’t in an obvious or intentional way—it was subtle, almost invisible. But once I saw it, I could never unsee it.
🌍 The Reality of Unconscious Bias
Unconscious bias isn’t always about deliberate prejudice—it’s about the deeply ingrained stereotypes and assumptions we carry without even realizing it. These biases come from our upbringing, culture, past experiences, and social conditioning. They can shape how we perceive others, how we make decisions, and even how we judge our own capabilities.
👩💻 My Experience with Bias in Tech
As a woman in engineering, I’ve faced unconscious bias many times. One moment that stands out was during a leadership meeting where I presented a solution to a technical problem. Despite my experience and expertise, my idea was initially overlooked—until a male colleague repeated the same point, and suddenly, it was validated.
At first, I questioned myself. Did I not explain it well? Was my idea not strong enough? But then I realized—this was not about my competence, but about bias that existed in the room.
💡 How I Chose to Respond
Instead of getting frustrated, I decided to challenge the bias constructively:
✅ I started asserting my ideas with confidence—speaking with authority, making eye contact, and ensuring my contributions were acknowledged.
✅ I found allies in the room—colleagues who recognized the bias and actively supported underrepresented voices.
✅ I became a mentor for other women in tech, encouraging them to own their expertise and never let bias define their worth.
🔄 Overcoming Bias with Mindfulness & Awareness
One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that unconscious bias exists in all of us—including myself. Recognizing it is the first step toward change.
I have learned to practice mindfulness and active listening when engaging with others, asking myself:
🔹 Am I making assumptions based on stereotypes?
🔹 Am I truly listening, or am I filtering what I hear based on my own experiences?
🔹 How can I challenge biases in a way that creates awareness rather than division?
🚀 Moving Forward: Creating Inclusive Spaces
Addressing unconscious bias isn’t just about personal awareness—it’s about building environments where diverse voices are heard, valued, and respected. Whether in tech, mentorship, or leadership, we must:
💡 Call out biases when we see them—kindly but firmly.
💡 Create safe spaces where everyone, regardless of gender, background, or identity, feels empowered to share their ideas.
💡 Mentor and uplift others, ensuring that bias doesn’t hold anyone back from reaching their full potential.
💬 Your Voice Matters
I share this story not just as a reflection, but as a call to action. Unconscious bias is real, but so is our power to overcome it. Have you ever encountered bias in your journey? How did you handle it? Let’s start the conversation.
