Breast Cancer Awareness Session

A few days ago, I attended a powerful seminar on Breast Cancer Awareness at my university. The session was filled with crucial knowledge and practical steps we all need to take. Breast cancer is more common in women, and early detection is key to saving lives.

It’s recommended that women aged 40 and above undergo regular screenings, with mammograms every 1-2 years. However, for those with a family history or higher risk factors, it’s essential to start earlier, and consulting a doctor is crucial to creating a personalized plan. The session also highlighted the importance of self-examinations, as they allow women to detect any unusual changes early.

Tips for Self-Examination:

  1. Look for Changes: Stand in front of a mirror with your arms by your sides, then raise them. Check for visible changes in breast size, shape, or symmetry.
  2. Feel for Lumps: Use the pads of your fingers to gently press in a circular motion around the entire breast, covering the armpit area.
  3. Check in Different Positions: Examine while standing, sitting, and lying down.

Tests for Ages 18+:

  • Clinical Breast Exam (CBE): Women in their 20s and 30s should have a CBE at least every 3 years.
  • Mammogram: Recommended for women aged 40 and older.

Spreading awareness in our communities is equally vital. We need to break the stigma surrounding discussions about breast cancer by encouraging open conversations. Organizing community events, supporting research, and sharing knowledge can create a ripple effect, helping women take control of their health and reducing the impact of this disease. Together, through awareness and action, we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against breast cancer.
