Cancer awareness month, down syndrome

On this third day of October, I stand before something small yet profoundly meaningful, my very first harvest of broccoli. To many, it may look like just a vegetable, but to me, it is a living symbol. Because October is not just another month on the calendar, it carries weight, memory, and hope.
It is Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we remember the battles fought and the battles still being fought. It is also Down Syndrome Awareness Month, reminding us of the extraordinary beauty and dignity in what the world too often calls “different.” And the “3” in October; today, the third, brings to mind the three copies of the chromosome that define Down Syndrome, a reminder that life itself is both fragile and resilient.
Six months ago, I lost my mother. She was more than a mother, she was a warrior. A breast cancer warrior who stood tall in the face of pain, who lived with courage even as her body grew weak. Today, as I look at this broccoli, green and alive, I feel her presence. I remember her strength. And I remember that life, like a seed planted in the soil, can rise again; even after loss.
You see, green is more than a color. It is renewal. It is growth. It is the audacity of hope springing forth from the ground. This broccoli is not just food for the body, it is food for the soul. It whispers to me that even in grief, there can be growth. Even in mourning, there can be meaning. Even after death, there can be life that reminds us to keep going.
And so, on this day, I choose to believe that my mother’s fight was not in vain. That the awareness we raise in this month of October will save lives. That the seeds we plant; in gardens, in communities, in hearts, will grow into something stronger than what we’ve lost.
My friends, we cannot choose the battles life gives us, but we can choose how we face them. We can choose courage. We can choose compassion. We can choose hope.
Because the audacity of hope is not simply the belief that tomorrow will be better. It is the conviction that, even in the darkest night, the seed of tomorrow’s harvest is already taking root.
And today, with this green broccoli in my hand, I choose to hope.
