"Challenges Faced by Women in Nigerian Marriages: A Complex Web of Cultural, Economic, and

Women in Nigeria face numerous challenges in marriages, largely influenced by cultural, economic and legal factors. One major issue is gender-based violence, which is often linked to power imbalances in relationships and societal norms that tolerate or condone such behavior. Economic dependence on their husbands can exacerbate women's vulnerability to abuse, as they may lack the financial autonomy to leave abusive relationships or make independent decisions.

The prevalence of child marriage is another significant concern, with Nigeria having one of the highest rates of child marriage in Africa. This practice denies girls their fundamental rights to education, safe living conditions and freedom from violence, often leading to poor health outcomes and limited opportunities.

Polygamy is also a notable issue, with Nigeria having the fifth-highest polygamy prevalence globally. While civil law prohibits polygamy, customary laws permit it, leading to complex legal and social implications for women in polygamous relationships.

Furthermore, women in Nigeria often face discriminatory laws, religious and cultural norms that limit their rights and opportunities. The country's constitution provides for gender equality, but implementation and enforcement remain inconsistent, and societal attitudes often perpetuate gender-based discrimination

Additionally, access to healthcare and education can be limited for women, particularly in rural areas or those with lower socioeconomic status. Maternal mortality rates are high, and women's reproductive rights are often compromised due to restrictive laws and cultural norms.

Overall, the issues women face in Nigerian marriages are deeply intertwined with broader societal and cultural challenges, requiring comprehensive solutions that address these underlying factors.
