Changing the narrative

There has been a disturbing rise in violence against women in our country, with reports of young campus women being brutally killed. This has sparked a major call to action from concerned citizens. In response to this alarming trend, some women and content creators took to the streets to demand an end to gender-based violence.

On Thursday,I had the opportunity to attend an event organized by FIDA Kenya, an agency of women lawyers dedicated to empowering women and ending gender based violence.

I thought only women would attend the event as it centered mostly on the on going violence against women. But actually a lot of men also attended the event eager to learn on how they to could help change the narrative.

The event kicked off with a discussion on gender-based violence, shedding light on the various forms it can take place and the devastating impact it has on women's lives. This was followed by a panel discussion on strategies to address and prevent gender-based violence.Various students gave their opinions, some sharing their own personal experiences and others providing possible solutions for the survivors. It was a safe space where each individual got to give their views, there was even a few debates where the men gave their views ,the women debated against them and vice versa.Afterwards the event organizers adviced us accordingly after having heard our views and even corrected some of the misconceptions they had heard during our debates.

The event was incredibly impactful and an eye opener. It was heartening to see so many people coming together to stand up against violence towards women and to advocate for change. It is clear that there is a pressing need for action to be taken to protect women and ensure their safety in our society. Let us all join hands in this important fight for gender equality and the end of violence against women.
