Kinda Child Care Kenya

The organization exists to help non-school-going babies from needy families access decent childcare services. We are working to build a safe environment where babies from different backgrounds – social, cultural, and religious can grow together in a healthy environment. Majority of the babies depend on support from donors and well-wishers because their parents cannot afford to pay for the services as they all come from very poor economic backgrounds. Majority of the parents are single mothers who struggle to meet the most basic needs and such support means a lot to them.

Currently the facility has a total of 30 babies who are dropped as early as 7 am and picked as late as 7pm.  Our vision is to change the world each child at a time while our mission is to support the whole family unit through the child. We have committed to providing everything to the babies to ease the burden on parents. They are only required to drop the babies and pick them on time. We offer food, play materials, personal care items and child care among others.

Kinda Child Care also has a program called Project Empower which seeks to contribute towards improving the economic situation among the parents and guardians of Kinda Child Care. A good number of the parents drop the children and start the hard work of searching for menial jobs available for the non-skilled individuals. This puts them in a disadvantaged position with low or no income. These circumstances necessitate Kinda Child Care to extend the recommended grace period of 3 months. By empowering these parents and guardians through Project Empower, Kinda Child Care will not only have lifted the economic status of the parents but also reduced the over reliance on sponsorship as many parents will be able to pay for the services for child care. We already started the program by identifying and sponsoring 10 parents/guardians from Kinda Child Care to take up vocational training. Six out of the ten beneficiaries have been able to secure jobs while four have started their own business based on the skills acquired.   The direct beneficiaries of the program will be sixty parents/ guardians from Kinda child Care Kenya.

TARGET GROUP OF SUPPORT

Our target group is non-school-going babies between the ages of six months and three years and their siblings, parents/ guardians, grandmothers and members of staff. Most of these are youth and women (teenage parents and single mothers).

The Primary beneficiaries of Project Empower will be parents/ guardians of the children at Kinda Child Care Kenya who will benefit from the vocational trainings. The labour on demand mobile application will be open for use to all who could benefit from the match-making function.

The secondary beneficiaries for both projects will be the community around Bangla Slums and the church of African Nazarene which has let out their space within the church compound and uses the facilities like play areas established by Kinda Care.

// Over the next three years the total number of lives impacted will easily be above 10,000.

OBJECTIVES, STRATEGIES AND IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

· To provide basic child care needs such as food for proper growth and development of the child.

· To encourage normal child growth by offering play materials and a safe environment.

· To reduce the struggles among the vulnerable groups such as the non-skilled, the elderly, the youth and the disabled.

· To become a model childcare provider by ensuring compliance and higher standards of child health and safety.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED

Kinda Child Care Kenya – Community-Based Organization is seeking for support in these 4 areas:

· Meals budget 2024 for the very young in the community

· Child Care Materials 2024 budget

· Sponsorships for individual babies

· Capacity Building / economic empowerment of the very needy in the community

Food Support.

Most of the beneficiaries of Kinda Child Care program struggle with the quantity and quality of food they offer to the babies, especially with the current inflation and a spike in the prices of food and other basic commodities.  This coupled with the economic background of our parents and guardians have made the situation worse as families have to deal with competing needs. A majority can only afford one meal a day. A 2-kilogram packet of unga (maize flour) goes for KSH. 260, accompaniments total cost is KSH. 100, a litre of kerosene used for cooking goes for KSH. 120, a jerry can of water goes for KSH.20. This means a proper family meal would cost about KSH. 470 which most families cannot afford because of the competing needs within the family.  Most babies are only able to eat a balanced diet at Kinda Care.

Child Care Non-food Items

We also offer support to parents and guardians by providing basic child materials such as clothes, play items, diapers and other personal care items such as baby oil. We believe a smiling child is a happy child. We strive to make Kinda Child Care a safe haven for the babies. Our main challenge is the limitation of funds to provide better play items and a safe space that will allow the babies to achieve the key milestones without problems. Most of the play items get worn out over time and require replacement once in a while. The number has considerably gone up as we now house sixty children and they crowd over play items.

Child Sponsorship

It costs €35 or KSH. 5500 to keep a child at Kinda Care for a whole month. This covers the administrative and operational costs at the center. Currently we have managed to get support for thirty children at the facility. Further support is needed to cater for the other group of the thirty children who have been admitted or awaiting admission at the facility. Our partners may choose to support the whole project in general through monthly contributions. Alternatively, they can also support specific children for those seeking to build a relationship. Regular updates and reports as well as the child’s story will be availed in this case. 100% of the support goes towards supporting the needs of the children at the facility.
