Community Sewing workshop: Learn new skills for a brighter future

Hello, I'm Glenda and I studied Knitwear Design at Nottingham Trent University followed by being a Buyer for Marks & Spencer for 3 years. I subsequently studied for a PGCE and have been teaching Art and Design & Textiles (20 years) in schools, colleges in London and further education in Hertfordshire.

As time progressed, I developed my own design and sewing workshop business in my local community, Stitch Amazingly: www.stitchamazingly.com, which started off in humble beginnings 5 years ago from my dining room and then we expanded to my local church annexe. Stitch Amazingly has evolved into a sewing club for my many students who have been attending for some years. They have expressed their love, enjoyment and the benefits of attending, from learning a new skill to just chilling out from their intense and busy career/life or other challenging areas of their lives. Some of my students have worked on up-cycling their wardrobe which was a positive way forward in reducing fabric waste, saving money and making it into something new!

I am passionate about teaching and supporting my students with the development of their own independent creativity. I work with small groups to help build on community spirit, inspire friendships as well as nurturing their mental wellbeing, especially now during the pandemic.   I also would also like to continue mentoring young people who would like to pursue a future in the fashion, interior design and textiles world.  Another passionate reason for this project is to continue supporting the UK’s design and textile industry, especially now during these difficult times, and also to reduce the carbon footprint.    I aim to help support the young potential, ethical minded designers, working with both women and men who would be given the opportunity of community support through an activity whilst learning a new skill and forming new friendships.    I will also strive to work on ethical and sustainable projects to maintain the drive to a greener planet, working with charities such as Crisis, on projects to teach and help the unskilled homeless people back on their feet to help carve a future for themselves.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like any more information or if you would like to join one of my workshops. Zoom sessions are in the pipeline.

I look forward to hearing from you and I thank you in advance for your donation which will help so many.

  Take care and stay safe.

  Glenda
