"Wangechi Grace Kahuria's message was clear: creativity, collaboration, and unity are essential for making progress in Africa."

Wangechi Grace Kahuria, the Executive Director of the Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU), once spoke to her colleagues from the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) during a training session in Nairobi. She emphasised the importance of creativity and collaboration in the face of declining financial support for important causes in Africa. Kahuria shared her thoughts about how organisations can adapt and thrive despite limited resources.

She began by addressing a significant challenge facing many organisations today: shrinking donor funds. Kahuria noted that although financial support is dwindling, it is essential to find innovative ways to use what little funding is available. Instead of seeing this as a setback, she encouraged her peers to think outside the box and be resourceful. This mindset could lead to new solutions and opportunities for making a positive impact.

Kahuria also highlighted the importance of forming partnerships. She explained that working together with other organisations can amplify their voices and enhance their efforts to support survivors of torture. By combining resources and expertise, these partnerships can create a stronger force for change. She said that Africa needs to have a louder voice in global discussions, and collaboration is key to achieving this goal.

The Executive Director stressed that "the power of convening is so great." She explained that when organisations come together, they create a platform for their collective voices to be heard. This can lead to increased awareness and action on important issues, such as the fight against torture and the support of those who have suffered from it. By sharing their experiences and knowledge, these organisations can make a more significant impact than they could alone.

Kahuria's remarks resonated with the members of IRCT, who were gathered to learn about the Global Standards on Rehabilitation. This training aimed to provide them with the tools and techniques necessary to support survivors of torture throughout Africa. The participants shared decades of experience in helping those affected by torture and were eager to apply this knowledge in their work.

Through her speech, Kahuria inspired the audience to embrace creativity and partnership. She reminded them that even with limited resources, they could make a difference by working together and supporting each other. The audience left the session with renewed energy and determination to face the challenges ahead.

Kahuria's emphasis on collaboration and the importance of having a strong voice is especially crucial in the context of human rights. As the participants in the training session knew all too well, the fight against torture is ongoing, and the need for justice is more pressing than ever. By strengthening partnerships, organisations can better advocate for the rights of survivors and ensure their needs are met.

Wangechi Grace Kahuria's message was clear: creativity, collaboration, and unity are essential for making progress in Africa. As organisations face shrinking donor funds, they must think innovatively about how to utilise their resources effectively. By coming together and amplifying their voices, they can create lasting change and support the healing of survivors of torture. The power of partnerships can transform challenges into opportunities, and this is a vital lesson for everyone involved in the fight for justice and human rights in Africa.
