Daphne Caruana Galizia

Daphne Caruana Galizia was not just a journalist—she was a force of nature. Known for her fearless investigative reporting, she spent decades exposing corruption, money laundering, and political scandals in Malta. Her sharp writing and relentless pursuit of the truth made her one of the most influential and controversial figures in the country.

Born in 1964, Daphne built her reputation as an independent journalist who refused to be silenced. She ran a personal blog, Running Commentary, where she uncovered some of Malta’s most shocking corruption scandals, often linking high-ranking politicians to financial crimes. Her work gained international recognition, especially when she played a crucial role in investigating the Panama Papers, exposing offshore accounts tied to powerful Maltese officials.

But speaking truth to power made her many enemies. She faced constant harassment, lawsuits, and threats, yet she never backed down. However, on October 16, 2017, her relentless pursuit of justice was violently cut short. As she was driving near her home, a bomb planted in her car exploded, killing her instantly.

Her last blog post, published just minutes before her assassination, contained chilling words:

"There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate."

Daphne’s murder sparked outrage across the world, raising serious questions about press freedom, corruption, and political accountability in Malta. The investigation revealed links between government officials and organized crime, proving that she had been dangerously close to the truth. After years of public pressure, several individuals, including a businessman with government connections, were arrested for orchestrating her killing.

Even in death, Daphne Caruana Galizia’s voice remains powerful. She has become a symbol of journalistic courage, inspiring others to continue the fight against corruption and injustice. Her story is a reminder that truth may be silenced for a moment, but it never truly dies.
