Dhara for Dhara
Founder, ‘Dhara for Dhara’ | Climate Justice & Eco-Health Advocate | Storyteller | Mental Health Champion | Sustainable Lifestyle Promoter – India
I am Dhara Patel from Gujarat, India — a passionate youth leader working at the intersection of environmental sustainability, gender justice, and public health. As the founder of ‘Dhara for Dhara’, I lead storytelling-driven campaigns that highlight how our everyday choices — from sugar consumption to cosmetic use — impact Mother Earth and disproportionately affect women and marginalized communities.
India, now the world’s most populous country, holds incredible potential for large-scale behavioral and systemic change. With over 1.4 billion people, even small shifts in awareness and lifestyle practices can lead to massive positive ripple effects — for the environment, for public health, and for social equity.
Under Dhara for Dhara, I run ‘Sugar is Not Sweet for Mother Earth’, a public awareness initiative revealing the hidden ecological and health costs of sugar — particularly its links to water-intensive monoculture farming, soil degradation, and rising non-communicable diseases like diabetes and obesity. This project sheds light on the unsustainable foundation of a seemingly innocent ingredient and how our consumption habits shape planetary and human health alike.
Another key vertical of my work focuses on the harmful impacts of chemical-laden cosmetics, especially in India, where nearly 60% of women regularly use unregulated and unsafe cosmetic products. These products often contain toxic substances such as mercury, lead, parabens, and formaldehyde, which can lead to long-term skin disorders, hormonal imbalances, and even cancer risks. Women from lower- and middle-income backgrounds, lacking access to accurate information and safer alternatives, bear the brunt of these risks. Through workshops, digital storytelling, and grassroots engagement, I advocate for cosmetovigilance, empower women to make informed choices, and call for stricter consumer safety regulations and transparency in the personal care industry.
My journey is deeply personal, grounded in lived experiences and a vision to drive localized, inclusive solutions that bridge beauty, health, and sustainability. I believe that in a country as vast and diverse as India, youth-led, culturally-rooted advocacy can be a powerful force for climate action and gender equity.
Let’s protect our future by nurturing both people and the planet — because when the Earth thrives, so do we.
