Economic Justice and Rights of Women in The Global South

Economic justice is a component of social justice and welfare economics. It is a set of moral and ethical principles for building economic institutions, where the ultimate goal is to create an opportunity for each person to establish a sufficient material foundation upon which to have a dignified, productive, and creative life.

It's important to explore this topic in the perspective of women's rights and development because gender equality will only be achieved when women have equal access to, and control over resources, and equal participation and influence in economic decision-making. Women’s economic empowerment means women can benefit from economic activities on terms which recognise the value of their contribution, respect their dignity and make it possible for them to negotiate a fair income.

That´s why I am so honored by the invitation of the Mexican Ambassador to South Africa Ana Luisa Fajer, to join the panel of this valuable open south-south dialogue on Economic Justice and Rights of Women in The Global South with these outstanding women:

Ottilia Anna Maunganidze is the acting Programme Head and Senior Researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) with a focus on emerging threats. At ISS, she helps to inform institutional strategy, and also undertakes research and provides technical assistance support to the Transnational Threats and International Crime (TTIC) division of the ISS. 

Claudia Calvin Venero is an international consultant on global issues, equality, ICT and leadership. She founded Mujeres Construyendo in 2009, the first platform for the dissemination of content of women bloggers in Spanish, whose objective is to promote the empowerment of women through information and communication technologies (ICT) and give visibility to female voices on the net.

Dr. Sithembile Mbete is a lecturer in the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria. She is also an Associate Fellow of the Centre for Governance Innovation (GovInn) at the University of Pretoria. Her research has been funded by the National Institute for Humanities and Social Science (NIHSS), National Research Foundation (NRF), the American Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Mellon Foundation. Sithembile is a 2019 Open Society Foundation Democracy Fellow. She is part of an international study group on the rise of populism across the world.
