As we navigate the complexities of human relationships and choices, it's essential to address the elephant in the room: the LGBT issue. While many of us may not be fans of the lifestyle, it's crucial to ask ourselves why we harbor dislike towards individuals who identify as LGBTQ. What harm have they caused us?
The common argument that LGBT individuals influence children is often cited, but this seems to be a Western concern rather than an African one. With many African countries criminalizing the concept, reported cases are few and far between. So, why is this issue at the forefront of our conversations in schools, churches, and families?
Could it be that we're aware of the natural tendency of human diversity and feel the need to address it consciously to preserve our cultural values? However, how can we address an issue that we deny exists?
*The Need for Honesty and Realistic Solutions*
Africans, it's time for us to acknowledge our shortcomings. Without admitting our weaknesses, we cannot chart a course for progress. Rhetorical values are no longer sufficient, as evident from the rise in drug abuse and human trafficking.
We need to foster a culture of honesty, where we can discuss issues openly and develop realistic solutions. Our current approach to policies, which often resembles a fire brigade response, is ineffective.
*A Structural Approach to Education*
One potential solution is to establish a structural education system that accommodates diverse worldviews. This could include:
- Liberal schools that promote inclusivity and diversity
- Non-liberal schools that cater to traditional values
By providing safe spaces for individuals with diverse quirks and preferences, we can help them seek help instead of struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.
It's time for us to reevaluate our approach to LGBT issues in Africa. By embracing honesty and promoting realistic solutions, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society for all.
*Note"
Please note that I am not advocating for LGBTQ+ rights but rather using this issue as a case study to explore how African societies can engage with Western ideals that contradict African values more effectively. The goal is to foster a nuanced discussion and find ways to promote inclusivity and understanding while respecting cultural differences.
