Empowering Change: The Journey of The Femiscope Initiative

When I reflect on the journey of The Femiscope Initiative, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude, pride, and a deep sense of purpose. This story is one of resilience, collective effort, and the unyielding belief in the potential of adolescent girls and young women.

Since our relaunch in March 2024, The Femiscope Initiative has transformed from a budding vision into a movement touching over 1,500 lives. It’s not just numbers—it’s Mary, who no longer feels ashamed of her period; Jane, who found peace and strength through our mental wellness programs; and hundreds of others whose lives have been reshaped through our work.

Our mission has been clear from the start: to create a world where every adolescent girl and young woman has the tools, knowledge, and confidence to thrive. But this mission has demanded more than words. It has required us to dig deep, form strategic partnerships, and take bold steps to address challenges such as period poverty, mental health stigma, and gender-based violence.

Four Pillars of Impact

  • Hatua Bora Initiative

Empowering 537 adolescents with education on sexual and reproductive health, menstrual hygiene, and family planning, Hatua Bora has been a beacon of hope. I recall the moment Mary, a 15-year-old participant, shared, “I no longer feel ashamed of my periods. I’ve learned how to manage them and feel confident sharing this knowledge with my friends.”

  • Mental Wellness Circle

Adolescence is a tumultuous time, and through this program, 57 young people have learned resilience and stress management. Jane’s testimony about finding strength during school challenges is a reminder of why safe mental health spaces are essential.

  • Kwa Usalama Wangu

Creating safe spaces for 790 survivors of gender-based violence has been one of our most challenging yet rewarding endeavors. From offering psychosocial support to advocating for justice, we’ve walked alongside survivors on their journey to healing.

  • Tujijenge Initiative

Equipping 127 adolescents with life skills and economic empowerment has been transformative. Initiatives like the Crochet Academy, where young mothers craft products to earn an income, embody our commitment to fostering financial independence.

Partnerships

Our work would not be possible without our incredible partners. From Wings of Hope Rescue Home to The Nairobi City County Government and organizations like The ONE Campaign, each collaboration has expanded our reach and deepened our impact. Whether it’s distributing over 1,200 sanitary pads, offering vocational training, or hosting events like the International Day of the Girl Child, these partnerships are a testament to the power of community.

Milestones Worth Celebrating

Last year, we hosted memorable events like the International Day of the Girl Child and the Skills Day Event at Wings of Hope Rescue Home. I vividly remember leading a 2km procession on October 11th, singing and chanting messages of empowerment. These moments remind us of collective action's joy, unity, and transformative power.

The launch of The Crochet Academy stands out as a particularly proud moment. Watching six girls graduate after a 21-day program filled me with hope. This initiative is more than just vocational training; it’s a pathway to economic independence and emotional healing.

Looking Ahead

As I write this, I’m filled with hope for the future. Our goals for 2025 are ambitious but grounded in our belief in the resilience and potential of the communities we serve. We aim to expand our reach to 3,000 beneficiaries, double our pad distribution efforts, and introduce new vocational programs.

The journey hasn’t been without challenges. But every hurdle reminds me of why we started. When I hear stories of girls standing tall with newfound confidence or mothers breaking free from cycles of dependency, I know our efforts are worth it.

A Call to Action

To all who read this, I invite you to join us in this journey. Be it through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, your support fuels our mission. Together, we can continue to empower, uplift, and transform lives.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in our mission. Together, let’s keep creating a world where every adolescent girl and young woman can thrive.

With hope and gratitude,

Sally Ndwiga
