Empowering Futures, One Girl at a Time - We keep Walking,

A couple of years back we had started an initiative Tumakinike Trust with the sole aim of assisting girls and women who were facing diverse challenges with GBV/Sexual Reproductive Health Rights issues. Two to three years later Covid happened and yes things aligned - how you would ask; the numbers recorded of Gender Based Violence and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights issues had hit an all time rate of concern not just in the local community but further of national concern in the wake of femicide being declared a national disaster.

We then set up an initiative 'Tunaweza Project' which loosely translated from Swahili means 'We can do it - Project'. Why Tunaweza we noted a gap in knowledge and sexual rights self awareness in both girls and young women. Our prject was then to bridge the knowledge gap through our capacity building and training initiatives in identified informal settings and rural communities.

Our objective had to be succintly clear for each identified group.

Homa Bay was supper special, poverty rates and child led homes having been clearly noted.

Our Objective - Provision of Sanitary Towels and knowledge enhancement on Sexual Reproductive Health.

Our Goal - Impacting every goal within Homa Bay County (1,000,000) girls

Time Period - 18 months

Actions to be taken - Co-ordination on the training dates for each sub-county/Team facilitation and training

Intended Impact - Mental Transformation & Social Re-enginerring on aspects of Sexual Reproductive Health Rights and Gender Based Violence

Happy to report we did a wooping 800+ girls in our first session during the first quarter of the year and the response was; you should have come sooner and please make a return visit.

Our approach was slightly different - we had the normal presentation and later incorporated small group chats, use of talents such music and drawing + personal pitching sessions to further draw out leadership in addittion to the knowledge enhancement.

We established a register to continue tracking the progress of each girls and evaluate the progress made in the different classifications using the basics of ABC - Abstain, Be Consistent Chill and continue to follow through in other parts of the country as well.

Nothing beats the look of joy and peace in a childs's face.

Those were the scenes of young women and girls when we visited schools in Homa Bay County.

The young girls were more than elated and eager to glean from our short but detailed sessions on Leadership and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights.

Our journey has just began and we promise to keep you posted as we keep walking!

Together, let’s empower and keep walking with our young girls as we shape and transform their lives

In a world where young girls face immense pressure to conform, the Tunaweza Project emerges as a beacon of hope and transformation. Rooted in the vibrant heart of our community, this initiative seeks to equip girls with the tools to make informed, life-affirming choices while celebrating their unique journeys. Tunaweza—which means "We Can"—is more than a project; it’s a movement that inspires young girls to embrace self-discipline and discover their inner strength.

At its core, the initiative promotes the value of self control ‘abstaining’ before engaging in sexual activity, a decision that fosters self-respect and empowers them to shape their futures on their terms.

Tunaweza goes beyond rules—it’s about learning from life’s stumbles. We believe mistakes are not the end but stepping stones to resilience and growth. Through mentorship, open dialogue, and community support, we aim to instill in every girl the belief that she is capable of greatness.

During our last meeting, held in the heart of Homa- Bay County ( Bwanda, Nyamanga, Sangore & Sigama Primary Schools) we engaged in meaningful conversations that resonated deeply with the girls. We inspired them with the message that, regardless of their circumstances or past mistakes, there are always second chances in life. The girls shared their life experiences, expressing both their challenges and their hopes for the future. These testimonials were powerful reminders of their resilience and potential.

The session became a safe haven where they could dream boldly and find encouragement to pursue those dreams. Many of them vowed to prioritize their self-worth, focus on their education, and make choices that align with their goals. The atmosphere was filled with hope, empowerment, and a renewed determination to rise above their challenges.

Join us in championing this cause, sharing stories, and sparking conversations that uplift our young girls and future women. Together, we can create a future where every girl knows her worth and has the courage to live a life of purpose and possibility.

At Tunaweza, we believe in their power to dream, to rise, and to shine.
