Empowering Young Voices: Writing Our Cultures into the Digital Future

Participants receiving their certificates

In a world where dominant narratives often overshadow local stories, giving young people the tools to write about their own culture is not only empowering, it’s revolutionary.

Recently, I had the privilege of co-organizing a powerful event dedicated to this very mission: training young storytellers to use Wikipedia as a platform to share and preserve their cultures, languages, and histories.

Me giving the price to the second winner

Thanks to World Pulse, where I’ve learned the art of impactful storytelling and the importance of making our voices heard, I was able to pass on those lessons and inspire others to take the same path. This event was not only a chance to teach digital skills, but also an occasion to introduce World Pulse and its vision of women-led change.

One of the greatest joys for me personally was having the opportunity to write about World Pulse in my native language, Malagasy, on Wikipedia. It was a way to honor the platform that has supported me and so many other women, and to make sure its story is accessible to my own community in our own words.

Why Wikipedia?

Participants

Wikipedia is one of the most visited websites in the world, yet many cultures and communities, especially in the Global South remain underrepresented or misrepresented. Articles about local traditions, native languages, influential figures, or historical events are often missing or told from an outside perspective.

This is why our training mattered so deeply. We wanted to equip young people with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to write their stories and contribute to global knowledge from their own perspective. We reminded them: they are not just readers of knowledge, they are creators of it.

World Pulse are present on Wikimedia in English, and if you're users, you have the power to update and enrich that information with accuracy and pride.

A Call to Action

To my sisters and changemakers on World Pulse and beyond:

If you’ve ever questioned whether your story is worth telling, let me say this, it is. If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference in your community, start with your voice.

Write about your culture. Share your knowledge. Step into the digital space with confidence, because your voice can reshape the narrative. And the good news? You’re not alone. World Pulse is here, and we are proud to walk this journey together.

Let’s keep building a world where everyone is represented.
