A lot of emphasis is laid on educating and sensitising women on cancer awareness. What about the young girls, children and even boys?
In the month of October which is called pink October, month dedicated to the fight against Breast cancer, Kids for kids Cameroon and Dr Tumasang Swiri Foundation have decided to include the younger generation in the fight against Breast cancer.
Through sensitisation, advocacy and awareness campaigns and strategies, we aim at reaching 2000 people through these campaigns in schools. Bearing in mind that women in the rural areas often lack access to information, this initiative is targeted towards reaching them through such project. While educating the students in rural schools, our aim is for these students to be aware of the signs and risk factors so they can grow up in the know and also take the message back home to their mothers who are mostly ignorant of the cause and manifestation of Breast cancers. We insist on early diagnosis, if they find any of the signs (painful Breast, lump, redness, swelling, change in colour, wrinkles on breast, flow of any liquid etc), they should quickly go to the hospital because early breast cancer is 100% curable if diagnosed at a precancerous stage.
Brest self examination will also be taught to the students so they can demonstrate in their immediate environment and other relations. We believe that students can be a vector of breast cancer awareness strategies if well educated. They will serve as connectors for breast cancer awareness in their families and homes. The rate of cancer victims and the high rate of late diagnosis is associated to ignorance and lack of information.
The only barrier to carrying out this campaign is lack of sufficient funds to reach the most remote villages where women are living in the dark. If the foundation had a budget of 1000 dollars, they will touch about 10.000 students and women in rural communities in Cameroon. During the campaign in some schools, testimonies of how some parents die and the memory of the pains the women went through has left so many girls traumatised.
We can save lives if access to information is made available to everyone. Why not start from an early stage so the girls grow up avoiding risk factors and knowing all about breast cancer. USE THIS MONTH OF OCTOBER TO RAISE AWARENESS IN YOUR OWN WAY. If we all raise our voices, this beast called Cancer will be defeated. EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS KEY.
