Fixing the Future: Lessons from an African Proverb

There’s an African proverb that says, “Life gives us an opportunity to fix the future, not the present. Learn from the past and the present because this will help you fix the future.”

The more I think about it, the more I realise how true it rings — especially in our professional and personal lives. We often get caught up trying to control the now — every deadline, every meeting, every decision — forgetting that today is already unfolding based on yesterday’s choices. What we can influence, however, is tomorrow.

In leadership, relationships, or even mental health, the temptation to “fix it all immediately” can be overwhelming. But growth doesn’t happen in a straight line. Healing doesn’t either. Whether you’re managing a team, running a business, or navigating personal transitions, the lesson here is to approach today with reflection and tomorrow with intention.

Mental health professionals often speak about the importance of agency — the belief that you have the power to influence your future. This proverb captures that perfectly. You can’t rewrite your past, but you can rewrite your narrative moving forward. You can’t control every outcome, but you can choose your response.

When we embrace learning from the present instead of wrestling with it, we create the emotional space for clarity. That space allows us to prepare, plan, and most importantly — hope. It’s how we turn pain into purpose, lessons into leadership, and struggles into stepping stones.

So, if you find yourself frustrated by where you are today, take a breath. The present is not the problem — it’s the teacher. The real opportunity lies in how you use what you’ve learned to build a better future.

Because in the end, the past teaches, the present tests, and the future rewards those who prepare.
