My name is Liz Njeri Kamau, and I’ve always been passionate about empowering young people, particularly girls, to overcome the challenges they face in accessing their rights and opportunities. Through my work as an educator and community advocate, I founded Flowing Wisdom, an initiative currently running at a comprehensive school in Nairobi, Kenya, and extending into the surrounding community.
It all started with a simple conversation, girls were missing school because they didn’t have access to menstrual products. They felt embarrassed, isolated, and unsure of how to manage their periods. I knew we needed to change this narrative. That’s when Flowing Wisdom was born.
At Flowing Wisdom, we focus on breaking the silence around menstruation and giving girls the knowledge and tools they need to manage their health with confidence. We teach menstrual health management, provide sustainable sanitary products like reusable pads, and include boys in the conversation, encouraging them to be allies in this journey. This is more than just education, it’s about creating a culture of support and understanding, where girls are empowered and no longer held back by stigma.
One of the most inspiring moments came when a young girl stood up during a session and said, “For the first time, I feel proud of my body.” That’s when I knew we were making a difference, not just for her, but for all the girls who now feel heard and supported.
Today, these girls are not just dreaming of a future where they are equal, they’re building it. They’re confident, informed, and ready to lead. Through Flowing Wisdom, we’re shaping a generation of girls who see menstruation not as a barrier but as a part of their strength.
As I continue this journey, I’m excited to see the ripple effects in the community and beyond. This is their vision for the future: a world where girls are empowered, supported, and unafraid to lead the way.
