Food Wars Instead?

Do you know the story your food tells?

Do you also know that, whatever the story is, your food carries an important message?

Well, you'd be wondering what food and war are doing under one topic...

Keep reading to find out!

As a master student studying in Europe, I am always on the lookout for useful opportunities to learn and also contribute with my little knowledge.

So, I opted to join other international students of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University to participate in an event themed around Agriculture and Food. This yearly event, named #kiemkracht is organised in Gent, Belgium.

For our work, we decided as a team to share food related stories focusing on ingredients or meals from our home country.

In a presentation titled "Why Not Food Wars Instead?", I iterated the following:

* the diversity of our food emphasises our uniqueness as a people

* yet the commonality of food items across the world emphasises how similar we are as humans

* while food contributes keenly to our identity and tells the story of who we are

* we barely acknowledge and appreciate the food diversity of other groups of people just as we barely accept the diversity of people

* however, even if we wanted to compete over anything, could it rather be over food? - the best way of cooking, the best taste or the best appearance etc...

* because such "wars" would only end up bringing people together to celebrate the differences and similarities of food. Drawing inspiration from the #Ghana-#Nigeria #JollofRiceWars😊

I was more excited that people loved the popular Ghanaian snack #kelewele which I shared at the event.

P.S. My happy face in the picture shows how excited I was to be sharing my story and culture with people from different backgrounds.

I'm grateful for this opportunity and support provided by the programme facilitators at the university.
