Footprints That Outlive Us

There’s a powerful African proverb that says: “True success is leaving behind footprints of hope, courage, and inspiration so that generations after us can walk a little taller and dream a little bigger.”

I’ve often thought about what it truly means to succeed. In our professional lives, we chase targets, milestones, and promotions — all necessary, but sometimes fleeting. The question that lingers is this: when the applause fades, what remains?

For me, the answer lies in the quiet impact we leave on others — the kind that doesn’t show up in quarterly reports or annual reviews. It’s the colleague you mentored who finally believes in their worth. The junior staff member who watched you navigate challenges with grace and thought, “If they can do it, maybe I can too.” It’s the small acts of humanity that plant seeds of resilience in others.

This kind of legacy is deeply linked to mental health — both our own and that of the people we influence. When we show courage, empathy, and hope in our workspaces, we give permission for others to do the same. We model emotional intelligence, not just professional competence. And that changes everything.

Think about it: resilience spreads through example. When leaders normalize vulnerability, teams begin to see that strength isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence. When peers encourage each other during burnout or uncertainty, workplaces shift from competition to compassion. That’s how we leave footprints — not through status, but through shared humanity.

So, as we continue to build our careers, let’s remember that every project, every meeting, every challenge is a chance to leave traces of something larger than ourselves. Success is not what we take when we rise — it’s what we leave behind when we move on.
