From South Lebanon to the World: My Ongoing Journey of Learning and Leading

From South Lebanon to the World: My Ongoing Journey of Learning and Leading

By Hawraa Ghandour

I am Hawraa Ghandour — a mother, writer, educator, and listener from South Lebanon. My journey began not just in classrooms or conference halls, but in the heart of a region marked by conflict, strength, and an enduring hunger for peace. South Lebanon has shaped the way I see the world. It taught me to live in tension and hope at once, to rebuild when everything falls apart, and to listen even when silence is loud.

This past year, I embarked on a professional development journey through a module that asked me to reflect deeply: Who am I in my learning path? What am I growing toward? And how am I preparing to serve my community and the world in more meaningful ways?

As I watched each video and took notes throughout this assignment, I realized that this is more than a learning module. It is a mirror, showing me where I’ve been and where I still want to go. In every stage of my life—whether as a student, mother, activist, or coach—I have been chasing one thing: transformation. And that requires education, not just in books, but in life.

Education as a Lifelong Act of Resistance and Renewal

My story is woven with many threads: the longing for a child that took 14 years of IVF, the grief of war zones, the joy of finally holding my daughter, and the quiet courage it takes to speak and teach from a place of healing. Education is my resistance. Every time I show up to a classroom, a coaching call, or a workshop, I reclaim a piece of dignity for myself and for those I serve.

This module reaffirmed my belief that professional development is not separate from personal growth. In fact, for women like me—navigating motherhood, cultural complexity, and social change—they are one and the same.

Throughout the course, I asked myself:

How can I use my story to open the door for others?

What kind of educator do I want to be in the age of AI and displacement?

How do I hold space for others while honoring my own healing?

My Current Chapter: Learning, Listening, Leading

Today, I stand at the intersection of many roles:

I am launching my own coaching practice focused on deep listening, emotional healing, and empowerment.

I am creating educational sessions that blend AI, ethics, and global citizenship with compassion and context.

I am offering workshops such as "Here to Hear" to help educators and changemakers use storytelling and digital tools in conflict-sensitive ways.

I am nurturing a space for women and children impacted by war—especially in Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria—to speak, be heard, and dream again.

I count this assignment not as a checklist task, but as a milestone in this unfolding work.

Areas I Am Growing In

This module helped me identify several areas I want to grow in:

Digital Presence & Visibility: I want to become more visible as a Middle Eastern woman educator on global platforms. I am working on building my website, posting regularly on LinkedIn, and engaging with networks like World Pulse.

Curriculum Development for Conflict Zones: I am researching trauma-informed and culturally responsive teaching methods to adapt them for the children and educators of South Lebanon.

Public Speaking: Though I have spoken in many rooms, I want to speak on global stages—not for prestige, but for peace. I am practicing speaking not just from expertise, but from lived truth.

Language Learning: I am improving my English fluency for teaching and advocacy, while also offering English lessons to beginners who want to connect with the world.

Grant Writing & Program Design: I am preparing proposals for initiatives like "Mothers Save Mother Nature," where I blend ecological action with women’s leadership.

How I Am Growing

🌿 I continue to take part in professional development sessions and global education webinars.🌿 I reach out to mentors and women leaders for guidance, especially through platforms like World Pulse.🌿 I reflect daily—through journaling, prayer, and dialogue with fellow changemakers.🌿 I show up, even when it’s hard. Even when I am tired or doubting. Because I know the seeds I plant today are for the peace I dream of tomorrow.

Sharing My Story to Light the Way

One of the biggest takeaways from this module is the power of storytelling. As someone who once feared that her voice didn’t matter, I now know that my story is a source of strength, and I want other women to know the same.

So, here I am—sharing not only my growth, but also my growing pains. Sharing the ways I am still becoming. Sharing the vision I hold for a world where women are not silenced, where educators are not burned out, and where children are not robbed of their right to learn in peace.

This story, this assignment, is a stepping stone on my path. And I carry it with gratitude.

To anyone reading this: You matter. Your learning matters. Your leadership matters.
