From the Diary of a Reluctant Teacher

Many years ago, my mom wanted me to be a teacher. I look back at what I have been doing for these few years and I realize I have been doing nothing else but teach. I have become a reluctant teacher and love it working with children, so much, that I usually get lost into it. Give me a group of children, and time will stop!

And God so loves me so much He gave me the perfect wife, of course she has a thousand flaws that balances the million ones that I possess! On Valentine, I made a deal that my wife could not refuse. We travelled for our first valentine, to Naivasha, had a good time and all I asked for, was the chance to sew buttons for 30 children and speaking to Class 8 candidates at Longonot DEB Primary School! And my wife granted me my wish because she knows how much my work means to me.

I keep saying that life is a song that every one of us should learn to sing and dance to. Whiel I set out to bring a cheerful song into the lives of children, I have ended up having my own song doing what my mom wanted me to do right from the beginning. The only difference is that I am that kind of a teacher who uses sewing thread, needles and buttons and speaking about the sacrificial love that God has for us in the form of Jesus Christ.

I wake up, every day, wanting to have more buttons and seeing myself travelling across the world in a 'sewing buttons mission'. I keep seeing myself being on a platform where I can share with the world about the power of a single button. Most of the children, especially boys, Lifesong Kenya sews buttons for feel so loved, appreciated and taken care of in a world where their own parents have neglected them.

The boys and girls we sew buttons for have never had the chance of being patted on the shoulder, being told a positive thing and being prophesied over. I remember taking part in my first 'mission buttons' outside Nairobi. The children and I didn't understand each other and much as we spoke to each other in our mother tongues, the knowing smiles and bursts of laughter told it all. We were engaging on a higher level knows no boundaries.

If you are a teacher, and you could be reading this, I would like you to know that every little thing you do, and go unnoticed, is noted by a Higher Source and to the children you do it to. You may not be getting the kind of salary you deserve, but trust me, somewhere; a group of children appreciate and pray for you. So keep doing what you are doing with an open heart, a positive and cheerful attitude and do it as if you are doing it to God.
