"Joan's story teaches us about the power of resilience and the importance of not letting trauma define us."

Early Life and Struggles

Joan Aluse was born in 1978 in Vihiga County, Kenya, into a humble family of eight. Her early childhood was filled with the pain of lack of school fees and sometimes working casual jobs to earn a living, laughter with her siblings, and a close-knit community even in moments of struggle.

Marriage and Gender-Based Violence

After high school, Joan moved to Nairobi to look for a job. During this time, she met a man who promised to marry her. She got married and gave birth to three children: two girls and one boy. However, her life took a devastating turn immediately after entering marriage when she became a victim and survivor of gender-based violence — an experience that would shape her journey, identity, and ultimately, her mission in life.

Surviving and Overcoming Trauma

The regular assaults left Joan physically and emotionally scarred but also socially isolated. Stigmatized by her community and silenced by fear, being married to a pastor, she struggled in the aftermath — battling depression, shame, and a justice system that often failed women like her. But Joan refused to be defined by her trauma and left the marriage after 14 years.

Building a New Life and Helping Others

With resilience and determination, Joan started a grocer kiosk to sell vegetables. Here, she met Dr. Dianah Kamande of CTWOO, who connected her to an organization called CREAW, which helped her start a school that hasn't stood yet. She later became a woman helping children from families experiencing gender-based violence and educating them in her school without charging them.

About CREAW

The Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) is a national feminist women's rights organization founded in 1999. CREAW is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of women and girls through bold, innovative, and holistic interventions. Their mission is to champion, expand, and actualize women's and girls' rights and social justice. CREAW works to end all forms of violence against women and girls, eliminate economic and social-cultural discrimination, and promote effective participation of women and girls in decision-making processes 1.

Challenges Joan Faced

Joan faced numerous challenges on her journey. The physical and emotional scars from regular assaults were compounded by social isolation and stigma from her community. Being married to a pastor added another layer of complexity, as she was silenced by fear and societal expectations. Joan also battled depression and shame, and she encountered a justice system that often failed to support women like her. Despite these obstacles, Joan's resilience and determination enabled her to transform her life and become a community champion.
