story
The party primaries exercise that was conducted recently is one that the womenfolk in Kenya will live to remember. Everything was in high gear and politicians saw the women as secret weapons sought after. women were sure that they will see themselves in the 11th parliament.
Women have for decades sat on the back seat in politics leaving the male counterparts in the male dominated political arena. The new constitution however, raised a glimmer of hope to many women who wished to join political field that is widely dominated by men.
this saw hundreds of women throw their heart into politics hoping to get their names on ballot paper.
From the way things were, results streaming into the tallying centers revealed that only a handful of the women were successful. the successful women were those already in the political arena. one wonders how others not in politics can find their way in serving in various positions in the new dispensation. how with the 2/3 rule representation be respected , even if it was said to be gradual when majority of the women aspirants lost their party nominations to the men competitors. supporters of the women cried of un-levelled play fields, and irregularities since some polling stations were marred with chaos that led to delays in voting.
KTN observed that the just concluded exercise has left Kenya's constitutional progress and women representation hanging in the balance. women have gone to the drawing board and some women political analysts say, the women have to do politics differently, not as the men do.
