I stumbled upon a news article and conservatives raging over the American national anthem

I honestly was not expecting so much rage regarding singing the American national anthem in any language other than English. So to put up context on what happened, a person of Latino origin decided to translate the American national anthem from English to Spanish since that was his/her native tongue.

Americans were not pleased about it. And that was back in 2006. Here are their comments, and my thoughts on each one:

”I have worked with hispanics for many years and alot of them are good friends. I do not think the anthem SHOULD BE IN ANY LANGUAGE BUT ENGLISH. If they want to live here they should be allowed to,but speak ENGLISH.Our forefathers and all that followed did.”

Are you fucking kidding me? First of all, there are many, and I mean MANY Hispanic individuals who cannot speak English. You telling them to speak English when it is not their native tongue is racist as hell. What if you decided to live in places like China or Germany, and what if the people who live there told you you’re not allowed to speak in any other language other than the language of origin?

If Spanish was my native language and I heard this, I’d nope the fuck outta here. I don’t need to listen to white people who think they’re better than everyone else.

And second, English is NOT the original language here in the United States. Native Americans have lived here far longer compared to European immigrants. They have spoken more languages than any white American I know, myself included.

When Europeans landed in what they call “the new world”, they enslaved (and even killed) thousands upon thousands of Native Americans for being unable to speak English. Which is hypocritical as Europeans never even bothered to understand the Navajo or Cherokee languages among many others.

Native Americans have a very low population and are much rarer to meet today as the survivors have isolated themselves and hidden away for the safety of their own heritage.

Do you STILL think English is America’s native language?

First of all, fuck Bush! Second, I already said it before, English is not the original language of the United States. Third, white supremacy at its finest. The United States has a huge diversity regarding languages, there are people living here that not only speak Spanish but also those that speak French, Portuguese, Chinese, and many others.

No one is forcing you to learn Spanish, but you’re being an absolute hypocrite for demanding people of Latino origin to speak English even though most of them can’t. Their grammar is much different compared to the English language. Dare I say it, if English is not your native tongue, it is one of the hardest languages to learn since that language requires far more rules compared to most other languages.

And if your native tongue is Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, etc., good luck trying to learn the Roman alphabet! I applaud those who had to ace the English language, because I honestly would be in hell if I had to learn Japanese and my mind would go blank if I was reading Japanese characters since I’m not used to learning non-Roman characters.

First of all, “illegals”? I’m in hell. The economy of Mexico is nowhere near as stable compared to the United States. If you were living in the shitty conditions that most Latinos had to deal with, you’d want out of there too!

If you were forced out of your home and had to walk through an entire hemisphere only to find out you were undocumented, you’d be pissed! You thought your life was hard enough in the states? This makes absolutely no fucking sense. Some words in English cannot be translated in other languages, so using that logic is bullshit. Second, you stated the USA was “founded” by immigrants, then you contradict yourself saying we’re all Americans “first”. Like dude, make up your fucking mind! Which one is it?! Another contradiction I found is that you said the anthem should not be changed to fit a “particular group of people”, even though you said earlier it was “founded” by immigrants.

The original English version is already fitting a particular group of people, white Americans whose native language is English. You sound like you’re just mad that a person of color did a take on the anthem that doesn’t fit the typical white perspective.

For the last time (which I doubt), ENGLISH IS NOT THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE!! I have several other contradictions to point out. First off, God did not speak English, the Bible you read was TRANSLATED! Second, your ancestors CHANGED and MODIFIED America and whitewashed everything they touched, which goes against your ideology! Third, the majority of immigrants living in the United States did not CHOOSE to come here! They were FORCED FROM THEIR HOMES!

Why should they respect a country who’s extremely racist towards their people and has endless instances of hypocrisy that’ll make even a toddler shake their head in disbelief.

In that case, you need to learn the Navajo language, you cannot sing the Native American tribe chants in English! You’re just taking away the Indians’ land and claiming it’s yours when it’s not! Funny how you scream at immigrants to “respect their new nation”, yet you had no respect for America yourselves (hint hint, killing and enslaving Native Americans).

Either you sing the chants in Navajo or don’t sing it at all. Also you’re not “legal” immigrants yourselves.
