About Me:

Afsana Rashid is a journalist living in Indian-administered Kashmir
and author of book, “Waiting for justice: widows and half-widows”.
Currently, associated with The Tribune, one of the largest circulated
English newspapers in India. Also associated with New Delhi based
English fortnightly, Milli Gazette as correspondent for Srinagar.
She has been associated with number of local dailies in Jammu and
Kashmir like the Daily Khidmat (English), Daily Etalaat (English),
The Kashmir Times and Kashmir Images. Afsana has worked with ETV News
(Urdu) at Hyderabad in India.

She has also worked as Research Investigator for various research projects.

She received her Masters in Mass Communication and Journalism from the
University of Kashmir. She has also qualified her NET (National
Eligibility Test) in Mass Communication and Journalism.
In 2005, Afsana was awarded a fellowship for her work on impact of
conflict on the subsistence livelihoods of marginalized communities in
Kashmir by Action Aid India. The following year, she was awarded a
Sanjoy Ghose Media fellowship for her work in conflict areas and
Sanjoy Ghose Humanitarian Award for story writing on post-earthquake
scenario.
She also received a UN Population Fund-Laadli Media Award for best
reporting in adverse conditions on gender issues in April 2008. Also,
awarded for best reporting on grassroot innovations by Grassroot
Innovation Augmentation Network (GIAN) North and the Bhoruka
Charitable trust – Media Awards-2007.

In Feb-March 2006, she went to Cardiff, London for a training
programme on “Conflict Reporting” and in 2007 to Amsterdam,
Netherlands and in January 2009 she went to Kathmandu.

She has attended many workshops, seminars and conventions. She has
also worked as Editor with Cultural Renewal of Kashmiri Student Youth
(CROKSY), an NGO working for promotion of cultural activities in the
valley. She has also worked as lecturer (on contract basis) in Mass
Communication and Video Production (MCVP) at Government Degree College
Baramulla, Kashmir.
