Introducing myself and my journal: The plight of African Rural Woman

About Me:
My name is Mary Namuyomba. I studied law at the Uganda Law Development Centre and graduated in 2012. I am pursuing a degree course at the Islamic University of Uganda, Kibuli Campus. I advocate for women to be empowered in exercising and enjoying their rights as men do so that they also participate in the social and economic development in their communities and families. I also work with Wakiso Women's Rights Empowerment and Development Organization as Programme Manager. Our major work is to stop gender-based domestic violence which is at rampant in Wakiso District, mostly in rural areas where 90% of the female population are illiterate. We also have a programme to train women in income generating activities and entrepreneurship skills to make them productive and developmental in order to become economically self-reliant. However, most men do not want to see their partners or housewives economically developing. This has caused gender-based violence at a very high rate in the district where we work. We need to sensitize and educate women about their rights to make them informed and advocate for their rights as this is the way they have to take in order to be developmental by initiating income-generating projects without the interference of men ,

My Passions:
I feel concerned to see my fellow women in Wakiso district where I am born being torchered and magnalized by men

My Challenges:
As a trained Counsel, the challenge I face is to educate my fellow women to know their rights and how they can defend those rights in order to be emancipated.

My Vision for the Future:
I want women in Wakiso to be empowered in their rights and in economic development within the next 3 years

My Areas of Expertise:
I am trained in law
